Having a F@#*king Cow

I was reading about the 8 year old Asperger's syndrome girl who was arrested in Idaho and all I can say is What the hell!!?? Where do teachers get off restraining her to the point of leaving bruises? Why was not wearing her cow costume so important that she was not allowed to attend the party?
Austism is more common than ever and there are constantly news stories about children being excluded, restrained whatever because people fear the different, the unique. People don't even try to understand how to best handle some of these children and it make me so angry. Where is the training that teachers need to handle situations like this?
A playground aid grabbed my son by his arm pulled him off a swing and yelled at him for swinging on his belly. The school was less than helpful until I suggested that his dad and I go have a chat with the chief of police about what we should do. Pretty much, it's like a restraining order, she can't even look at him funny without getting in trouble now that the vice principal has to act as Jarrett's personal monitor. Fortunately, Jarrett is very high functioning and can communicate very well , so I can ask and he tells me. But things like this should not be as common as they are becoming and it scares me how frequently incidents are happening.
I have always strived to be unique and allow my sons their oddities and quirks that define Max as Max and Jarrett as Jarrett. As Vicki Iovine said in one of her books pick your battles. I don't think the cow costume was a big enough problem to escalate to the point that it did? Fitting in is highly overrated.
P.S. See susansenator.com(which is where I read about this first) to read more thoughts on this.

Chaos and Mayhem..such is life

For me, stay at home mom is a misnomer. While I do work part time, for the most part, I'm home....kind of. I take kids to doctor appointments, drive Jarrett to school early for band once a week, handle all of Mikey's doctor appointments and prescriptions, run to the store to get things we forgot when we went grocery shopping and pretty much whatever else has to get done, I'm the one doing it.

Last Thursday, I had to get a chain and pull my brother's van out of a ditch with my truck because he was trying to go around a rollback that was picking up a car that had gone off the road and hit a patch of ice and went off the road. The area where we live is a small town...literally. For years there was one traffic light in the center of town. Several years ago we got another light for a grand total of two. Everybody knows everybody. All the town cops have been there for years. I know them personally and call them by first name. I know the chief of police and what kind of chew he takes. So it really was no big surprise when we got back home and my mom said the manager of the store where I work had called to see if we were alright and a girl my brother's girlfriend works with also called to check on us because they had heard what happend. On top of that my mom had been fighting pnemonia since just after Christmas and still was no better so I had been getting ready to get Jarrett off to school and make her a doctor's appointment when Matt had called. Mom got new medicine that seems to be helping this time so hopefully she'll be better soon.

Yesterday Jarrett got off the bus feeling upset so I had to pry out of him what was wrong. A boy that lives down the street from us that Jarrett has played with a few times has been being mean and saying mean things ( i'm not your friend..etc) and yesterday told Jarrett that another boy who Jarrett likes to talk to wasn't his friend or didn't like him or something along those lines. Jarrett told the bus driver and got permission to move away from these boys. His bus driver was one of our neighbors when I was growing up and she understands about his autism and to a certain point I think tries to protect Jarrett. We are the only family that gives her a gift at Christmas. I appreciate the extra help and understanding from her because some people just don't get it and she does.

During vacation we watched Muppets Wizard of Oz alot and it inspired Jarrett to do his own version starring Chowder and all his friends. I'm looking at videos cameras for all the filming I do and hope to invest in an actual video camera soon.

Happy New Year!!!

For New Year's Eve we went to Rich's house for a party. We had a grand time drinking, hanging with friends, Meeting Jimmy's new girlfriend and just having fun. We hardly ever go anywhere besides grocery shopping as just adults and have grown-up fun. Jimmy is really pushing for the whole gang to go to Myrtle Beach Bike Week this year and I for one hope we can pull it off this year. It's the one time we go away with just adults and cut loose and have fun. Plus, I get to be biker woman and not someone's mommy which is a welcome break. Happy New Year and enjoy Rich's fireworks display!!!

Loving Life

My boys and I are finding ways to entertain ourselves over Christmas Break. We have painted suncatchers which was not Jarrett's favorite gift but gave us a way to while away the hours. We made a bird feeder and a tool box(also kits received as gifts) and of course filmed some new material. School starts again tomorrow and I think we've had an equally fun/boring holiday. Hopefully, readjusting to school again will not take very long. I can't wait for Jarrett to find out how everyone liked his Joey the Pirate Monkey DVDs that he gave out as gifts.

We went to a friend's party for New Years and had a good time with drinking, fireworks and all kinds of fun. I had to open the next morning which is not as bad as it sounds since hardly anyone was up and moving at 6am. We took a group nap when I got home that ended with Max wetting our bed, much to his great dismay.
